Retrofit & Sustainability
Build a Greener Future with Our Retrofit & Sustainability Courses.
Approximately 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions are attributed to residential buildings. With over 200 local authorities worldwide having declared climate emergencies, addressing this issue requires immediate action to retrofit improved insulation and sustainable heating systems into the global housing infrastructure as a crucial step towards mitigating climate change.
What is retrofit?
Retrofitting involves integrating new systems designed for high energy efficiency and low energy consumption into buildings constructed without them. From simple measures like energy-efficient light bulbs to cutting-edge heating systems, the benefits are clear: cost-effective buildings, reduced environmental impact, and increased property value due to higher energy ratings.
Sustainable retrofitting methods for domestic properties span a broad spectrum, including solar panels, smart meters, and sustainable water and heating systems. It’s crucial to emphasise that the maintenance of these systems is as vital as their energy efficiency.
Contrary to common belief, retrofitting isn’t exclusive to commercial buildings. The government’s ‘every home counts review’ led to the introduction of PAS 2035, establishing a standard for retrofitting domestic properties. PAS 2035 empowers retrofit coordinators to take a holistic approach, ensuring not only the type of work carried out but also its adherence to acceptable standards. Accredited retrofit assessors play a crucial role in evaluating this work.
